WOODLAND HILLS—An estranged husband has been charged with several counts of attempted murder, torture and assault after allegedly attacking his former wife and her famous male friend with a machete and knife on Sunday, September 15.

The Los Angeles Police Department reported that music industry veteran and KJazz-FM (88.1) radio host Jerry Sharell and girlfriend Gigi Vasseghi were allegedly attacked and held hostage for hours by Gigi’s estranged husband, Behnam Vasseghi.

The 57-year-old Vasseghi allegedly wielded a machete and knife as he broke into Sharell’s Woodland Hills home and assaulted the unsuspecting couple. Reports allege the suspect repeatedly cut Sharell’s throat with a knife and cut the top of his estranged wife’s nose. He then demanded that his ex-wife watch as he attempted suicide by cutting his own wrists.

Gigi managed to escape the torture scene with minor injuries and call authorities. Vasseghi and Sharell were then transported to Northridge Hospital Medical Center in critical, but stable condition.

On Tuesday, September 17, the suspect was charged in case LA075290 with 14 felony counts of attempted murder, two felony counts of aggravated mayhem, two counts of torture, four counts of assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of making criminal threats, two counts of false imprisonment, one count of first degree burglary with persons present and one misdemeanor count of violating a restraining order, according to a press release by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office.

Gigi previously filed two restraining orders against her estranged husband, one on July 1 and another on August 27, for a history of domestic violence, according to authorities.

Jean Guccione, Director of Communications at the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, notified Canyon News via email that Mr. Vasseghi’s arraignment was continued to October 9, 2013 in Van Nuys Dept. 100 and that an additional charge of stalking was filed against Vasseghi the morning of September 24.

Bail has been set at $5.1 million and, if convicted, the suspect faces life in prison.
