Suspect being brought out of the Veteran's facility

WOODLAND HILLS—On April 25, a man was taken into police custody after he barricaded himself inside a disabled veterans’ facility in Woodland Hills. The Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call of a barricaded man in the 6500 block of Corbin Avenue at around 7:30 a.m.

According to a press release from the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, Jacob Matthew Zimmerman, 52, is facing one felony count each of assault with a deadly weapon, a shotgun, criminal threats, and possession of a firearm by a felon with three priors in case LA077629.

Zimmerman’s three priors listed on the complaint date back to a 1984 robbery conviction and a 2004 conviction for discharging a firearm with gross negligence and inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant. The suspect appeared in court on April 29, for his arraignment. His bail was set at more than $1 million.

Aerial footage of the incident depicted the unidentified man breaking the windows of the Disabled American Veterans Hall in order to gesture the police. The SWAT team was called to the scene and was able to detain the suspect after a seven-hour standoff. The region between Corbin Avenue and Victory Boulevard was closed during the standoff.

The suspect has been known to frequent the facility in the past. Authorities indicated that the suspect served in the military for close to six months before being discharged for unknown reasons.

The prosecutor has indicated that Zimmerman was upset that he was denied future membership at the Disabled Americans Veterans Lodge and assaulted the victim with a shotgun. When the victim managed to get away, the suspect barricaded himself in the building.

If convicted as charged, the suspect faces a maximum sentence of life in state prison. The case was investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department, Topanga Station.
