Union To Picket MPTF Hospital In Woodland Hills
Posted by Ivetta Babadjanian on Feb 20, 2013 - 9:44:08 AM

WOODLAND HILLS—Employees and care givers of the Motion Picture and Television Fund plan to picket the Woodland Hills care facility and hospital on Thursday, February 21. Four other MPTF locations will be picketed as well.

Although not an official strike, employees plan to picket due to disputes regarding staffing levels, wages, employee health care and retirement benefits. The picketing will begin from noon to 1 p.m. with a program of speakers.

The union has not yet decided whether to also picket the MPTF pre-Oscar party on Saturday, February 23 which is an annual fundraiser organized by Jeffrey Katzenberg at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The spokesperson of the union has stated that entertainment unions have not been contacted in order to gain support.

The union, Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West, has approximately 500 members at the MPTF’s Wasserman Campus in Woodland Hills. The SEIU-UHW is still working under the current expired contract and are honoring the no-strike clause instated.

There are two bargaining dates scheduled in March after which a strike can be put forth at any time. It was voted on January 30 by members that union leaders would have the authority to call a strike at their discretion.

"Progress was made in resolving a long list of open contract points and both parties were actively engaged in narrowing the discussions to a few key issues," said MPTF CEO, Bob Beitcher, in a statement released Wednesday, February 20.

"To facilitate additional progress, MPTF and SEIU continue to comply with additional information requests and MPTF has agreed to provide an educational workshop for SEIU’s bargaining unit. We are hopeful that the next bargaining session on March 7th will take us even closer to achieving a mutually satisfactory 3-year agreement."
