Veronica Castro, a local Woodland Hills Academy teacher, was driving her white Mustang southbound on De Soto Avenue Thursday afternoon when a northbound Honda struck her rear as she turned onto Burbank Boulevard, officials said.
The sheer force of the hit cut the Mustang in two, the front half coming to rest against a utility pole and the rear against a curb 20 feet away.
Twenty-six-year-old Castro climbed out of the car visibly shaken and was immediately comforted by bystanders. "He hit it so hard on the back wheel that it just literally tore the back end right off," said Officer John Stafford of LAPD Valley Traffic Division.
Castro and the unidentified Honda driver suffered minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for further check-ups. Bystanders said that the 21-year-old male driver of the Honda may have gone through a yellow or red traffic light, but were unclear how fast he was driving. However, officers assume he was traveling at a high speed, as his vehicle ended up 120 feet past the intersection after the crash, Stafford said.
"We've seen this (kind of crash) turn out a lot worse," Stafford said. "It was a great blessing. He hits her more on a broadside, and this could be really bad. We got really, really fortunate."
"When you cut a car in half and end up 120 feet north of the intersection, that's a lot," he said.
