SAN YSIDRO, CALIFORNIA—The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on Thursday, January 24 that under a new initiative, individuals seeking asylum in the United States will be sent to Tijuana, Mexico while their case is being processed.The initiative is to begin with the San Ysidro port of entry starting Friday, January 25.
According to DHS, those being deported are predominantly undocumented individuals attempting to enter the country illegally. There are protections in place for children traveling alone and families at risk of being separated. President Donald Trump outlined the problems at the border on The White House stating:
“We do not have the resources needed to hold them, and legal loopholes and activist court rulings prevent authorities from promptly returning them.”
“We have implemented an unprecedented action that will address the urgent humanitarian and security crisis at the Southern border. This humanitarian approach will help to end the exploitation of our generous immigration laws. The Migrant Protection Protocols represent a methodical commonsense approach, exercising long-standing statutory authority to help address the crisis at our Southern border,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen M. Nielsen on the Department of Homeland Security website.
Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) are a U.S. Government action where certain foreign individuals entering or seeking admission to the U.S. from Mexico – illegally or without proper documentation – can be returned to Mexico and wait outside of the U.S. for the duration of their immigration proceedings. Mexico will provide them with all appropriate humanitarian protections for the duration of their stay.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders explained to reporters in a press release:
“Thousands of illegal aliens are removed every month without seeing an immigration judge as a result of procedures in current law including voluntary removal and expedited removal. Just because you don’t see a judge doesn’t mean you aren’t receiving due process.”
