BEVERLY HILLS—The Beverly Hills City Council announced on Tuesday, July 24, a six-month ban of motorized scooters that went into effective immediately.
Citing a concern for public safety, the city council voted 4-1 for the ban of electric scooters, like Bird and Lime, Tuesday night. A 4/5 vote was required to pass the ordinance. Vice Mayor John Mirisch was the only council member to vote against implementing the ban.
According to a press release from the city of Beverly Hills, the ordinance prohibits the scooters from being placed in any public right-of-way or on public property, operated in any public-right-of-way or on public property, or offered for use anywhere in Beverly Hills.
The city of Santa Monica recently implemented an ordinance against motorized scooters, and the city of West Hollywood enacted a ban of the use of electric scooters.
The use of motorized scooters has risen in Beverly Hills in recent weeks. The BHPD has issued warnings and citations for riders not wearing helmets, driving on sidewalks in a business district or not possessing a valid driver’s license. Authorities have responded to several injury involved vehicle collisions involving motorized scooters. Officers have removed scooters from sidewalks and streets that obstruct normal movement of traffic and causing a hazard.
The Beverly Hills Police Department will enforce a zero-tolerance policy on the use of motorized scooters throughout the region. This will include impounding the devices and issuing citations related to vehicle code violations resulting in fines.
