HOLLYWOOD—Well, there was plenty of options for moviegoers this weekend in theaters with comedy, action and horror all vying for the top spot. In the end, it was comedy that came out on top, as Tyler Perry’s “Boo! A Madea Halloween” claimed the top spot at the box-office with $27.6 million.

Not a bad debut for a film that only opened in a little over 2,000 theaters. Perry’s last flick that featured his matriarch Mabel ‘Madea’ Simmons was “A Madea Christmas” only opened to $16 million, so Perry’s latest outing is proof audiences were eagerly anticipating the characters return on the big screen.

Nabbing second place was Tom Cruise and the sequel “Jack Reacher: Never Look Back” with a solid $23 million. Not a bad debut for a sequel, especially when the predecessor only opened to $15 million. Many speculated the action-flick to have stronger numbers, but with so much competition in theaters, it may have taken a bite from Cruise’s potential to woo in audiences.

The horror prequel, “Ouija: Origin of Evil” landed in third place with $14.1 million. Not a solid debut in my opinion, especially with Halloween right around the corner, one would have expected audiences looking for scares this weekend. Last week’s champion, “The Accountant” dropped to fourth place with $14 million. In less than 2 weeks, the action-flick is certain to cross the $50 million mark at the domestic box-office by Monday or Tuesday.

Rounding out the top five was the thriller “The Girl on the Train” with another $7.3 million to its tally.
