ACIFIC PALISADES—The Getty Villa will be hosting a lecture in the Auditorium on “Collecting and Displaying Byzantine Art in the Medieval, Renaissance, and Modern Periods” by Yale Professor and art historian, Robert Nelson on Thursday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m.
The official Getty website states that Nelson’s lecture will discuss how Byzantine works by Renaissance collectors evolved during the Modernist revolutions of the 19th and 20th centuries. The lecture is held in accordance with the symposium, “Heaven and Earth: Perspectives on Greece’s Byzantium,” also at the Getty Villa on May 2 and at the St. Sophia Cathedral in Los Angeles on May 3.
According to the Yale University website, Nelson “studies and teaches medieval art, mainly in the Eastern Mediterranean, and the history and methods of art history. He was the co-curator of ‘Holy Image, Hallowed Ground: Icons from Sinai’ at the J. Paul Getty Museum in 2006-2007.” He also wrote the book, “Hagia Sophia, 1850-1950.”

The gates will be open at 6 p.m. and the Auditorium will open at 7 p.m. The parking fee is $10. Seating will be available on a first-come first-serve basis, and the galleries will be open before and after the lecture. A light dinner meal, beer and wine will be available for purchase at the Café until 7:30 p.m. and complimentary refreshments will be served following the event.
