LAS VEGAS, NV—The highly anticipated Saturday night fight between Mexico’s Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Britain’s Amir Khan at the new T-mobile Arena in Las Vegas lived up to the hype that it had been billed for. It ended brashly, and how many expected it would, with a vicious knockout punch from Canelo Alvarez.

Khan began the fight with great promise, demonstrating to the world why he was chosen to jump up two weight classes to fight the middleweight champion in Alvarez. He put his quickness on display winning the first four rounds.

Alvarez calmed the storm and an array of punches from Khan and won the fifth round. Then it happened. The exciting fight came to an abrupt end when Alvarez dodged a quick jab from Khan, dropped his left shoulder, and delivered a malicious right-handed haymaker to the jaw of the Brit.

It was all over.

Khan fell flat on his back and was out cold for what seemed like an eternity. Even Canelo waited anxiously on his knees to make sure that his competitor was alright. He was eventually revived and was taken to the hospital, as a precaution, where he tweeted “Im okay everyone, thats boxing for you.”

With the knock-out, Alvarez now has 15 days to decide if he will fight Gennady Golovkin or he will be stripped of his title belt. Canelo was asked immediately after the fight if the “fight-of-the-year” would happen.

His response via a translator as reported by ESPN, “I’m willing to make [Golovkin] an offer. I’d be happy to not only fight him but also to beat him. If the fight happens, I’m happy to fight him. It’s no problem.”

At a post-fight news conference, Golden Boy Promotions CEO and representative of Alvarez, Oscar De La Hoya said, “Those negotiations will happen behind closed doors, and when we come to an agreement, we will let everyone know. That’s the fight to make. [Sunday] I will make the call. I will start negotiating, and I really hope we can make an agreement.”

“If that’s the fight Canelo wants, I will get some well-deserved rest and when I wake up start making some phone calls. I’ve always said come May 8 we will start negotiating with Golovkin’s people.”

If this fight has any chance of happening, we should see contract negotiations began to ramp up in the coming days. De La Hoya invited Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to fight where he sat ringside. The two have discussed hosting the fight at Jones’ AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. This would mean the fight would be featured in front of 80,000 plus fans.

“I invited Jerry Jones personally. That’s how serious he is about taking a Canelo fight or several fights to his stadium,” said De La Hoya.

With the win on Saturday, Alvarez now has a record of 47-1-1 with 33 KOs. Golovkin remains a perfect 35-0 with 32 KOs. For the sake of boxing, let’s hope this fight becomes a reality.
