STUDIO CITY—On Friday, May 29 two carjackers were taken to the hospital in critical condition after crashing a stolen BMW. The owner of the car led police to the scene by tracking his stolen smartphone.

At around 2:30 a.m. near the 4500 block of Willow Brook Avenue, two armed suspects robbed a man at gunpoint for this wallet, smartphone, and vehicle. Just before 3 a.m. the owner of the car was able to track his phone on a computer through its location function, leading police to the carjackers near the Pasadena and Studio City areas.

Once the LAPD helicopter found the BMW with a spotlight, the driver of the car crashed into a tree along the intersection of Paloma Street and Allen Avenue.

Authorities found both the driver and passenger of the vehicle unconscious, and the engine on fire. Officials were able to get the passenger out of the car, who suffered critical injuries. The driver was rescued using the Jaws of Life, and suffered life-threatening injuries.
