LOS ANGELES—The Los Angeles Chargers suffered an opening season loss for the third year in a row. This time losing to the Kansas City Chiefs 38-28. This is also the ninth straight loss the Chargers have suffered against the Chiefs.

Los Angeles began the game with the ball. Kansas City forced them to go three and out. Then, on the punt return, Tyreek Hill made a cut and went up the left sideline on his way to a 91-yard touchdown. The Chiefs were ahead 7-0. The Chargers would drive down the field to score a field goal. On the ensuing Chiefs drive, Quarterback Patrick Mahomes found Wide Receiver Tyreek Hill on a slant before he out ran the Chargers defense for a 58-yard touchdown.

After a few more drives, the Chargers would finally score a touchdown of their own. Philip Rivers methodically drove the offense down the field. The biggest offensive play was a 25-yard pass to Running Back Melvin Gordon, that brought Los Angeles to the Chiefs 34-yard line. Rivers would finish the drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Running Back Austin Ekeler. The Chiefs would respond with a field goal. At halftime, Kansas City was ahead 17-12.

Kansas City received the ball to start the second half. Hill started the drive with a catch for 21 yards. A couple of plays later, Mahomes found Wide Receiver Sammy Watkins for 16 yards. Mahomes capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Wide Receiver De’Anthony Thomas bringing the score to 24-12.

On the Chargers’ next drive, Rivers threw an interception to Cornerback Rob Parker. The Chiefs would once again capitalize on their opportunities. On 3rd and 13, Mahomes found Hill for a 34-yard gain. Mahomes finished the drive with a perfect touch pass to Fullback Anthony Sherman bringing the score to 31-12 with 48 seconds left in the third quarter.

Los Angeles would make a run to end the game, though. Wide Receiver Keenan Allen scored on a 20-yard touchdown to make it 31-20. Then, following another Chiefs touchdown, Wide Receiver Tyrell Williams would score to pull the Chargers within 10 points, but Los Angeles would not get any closer. They lost to to the Chiefs 38-28.

(KC) QB Patrick Mahomes was 15/27 for 256 yards with 4 TDs and 1 INT.  (KC) WR Tyreek Hill had 7 receptions for 169 yards with 2 TDs. He also had a 91 yard punt return TD. (LA) QB Philip Rivers was 34/51 for 424 yards with 3 TDs and 1 INT. (LA) WR Keenan Allen had 8 receptions for 108 yards and 1 TD.

The Chargers have started off slowly the past three years. However, they can bounce back next week with a win on the road against the Buffalo Bills.
