WEST HOLLYWOOD—A deputy-involved shooting left one man dead at an apartment complex on April 7.

At around 9:30 p.m., sheriff’s detectives from the West Hollywood station responded to a call of a man with a knife in the 900 block of Palm Avenue and were directed to a specific apartment in the area, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Department. Once there, they encountered two men leaving the apartment. These men “aggressed” the responding deputies, and the shooting occurred.

Deputies proceeded into the apartment after hearing a violent scuffle inside, where they found two men fighting each other with one man choking the other. They managed to separate and detain the combative suspects. The news release also stated that a large knife was found at the scene.

All four of the men involved were taken to local hospitals. Three of them sustained stab wounds which were not life threatening, and they were said to be in stable condition. One man was pronounced dead at the hospital. Though the release stated that he was 24-years-old, the identity of this individual was not revealed, nor was the identity of the officer involved in the shooting.

The incident occurred in the same area where 34-year-old Kurtland Ma was stabbed to death by his partner Andre Davids, 36, on March 30.

The shooting is being investigated by several different agencies, including the sheriff’s department’s Homicide and Internal Affairs Bureau, the Los Angeles County District Attorney and the County Coroner’s Officer in addition to the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review. Once the investigation is complete, the shooting and every aspect of it is covered by the Sheriff’s Executive Force Review Committee.
