UNITED STATES—Direct primary care (DPC) is becoming a popular alternative to health insurance. The new model has been around for several years. According to the eHealth website, the average cost of health insurance for one person per month is approximately $321.

This new model of healthcare could have a monthly cost as low as $70. “Direct Primary Care (DPC) is an innovative alternative payment model improving access to high functioning healthcare with a simple, flat, affordable membership fee. No fee-for-service payments. No third party billing. The defining element of DPC is an enduring and trusting relationship between a patient and his or her primary care provider,” states the company’s website.

According to Business Insider, larger businesses like Amazon are considering changing to the DPC model. With regular health insurance, doctors are able to choose which providers they will accept; this model allows for them to charge a monthly fee for their services instead. Doctors will paid through their monthly fees instead of set salaries. DPC allows for patients to receive more care without paying for each individual appointment.

To decrease wait times doctors will handle fewer patients. This method allows the doctor to increase their time with the patients and provide more access to the doctor when needed to create more of an unrestricted relationship between doctor and patient. Business Insider discussed how co-pays will be nonexistent because the monthly cost will cover whatever is needed.

A summit will be held to inform the public of what the model entails. The summit for this new healthcare model is set to be hosted in Indianapolis, Indiana from Friday, July 13 to Sunday, July 15. DPC leaders and doctors will be at the summit to answer questions and discuss in additional details about the model.
