HOLLYWOOD—In 1994, audiences were introduced to two of the dumbest characters in movie history in Lloyd and Harry in “Dumb and Dumber.” Twenty years later, the sequel fans have been clamoring about has finally arrived in “Dumb and Dumber To.” Yes, the spelling of that title is accurate.
This sequel reunites funnymen Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. Its quite polarizing to see Daniels in such a comedic role compared to some of his most recent work on the HBO drama “The Newsroom.” So what brings these two characters back together after years apart?
Well the revelation that Harry (Daniels) has a daughter he didn’t know about. This leads the duo onto a cross-country trek to reunite the estranged father and daughter. Along the way a ton of goofy incidents take place leaving the audience in stitches.
Without spoiling too much I’d say an encounter with a bicycle and a bus is one of those moments, and we can’t forget that conversation the duo have with an elderly woman who is looking for a bit of loving.
The film is helmed by comedic duo and siblings Bobby and Peter Farrelly, who have been known to push the boundaries with their comedies, if you’re asking just check out “Me, Myself and Irene” and “There’s Something About Mary.”
Comedy comes in many shapes and sizes, but what makes “Dumb and Dumber To” superior to recent comedies is the fact that our main characters don’t try to hard to be funny, they naturally are. When you take characters where a few marbles could be missing hilarity will ensue in the most unexpected conversations. Rather it is a phone conversation, a walk down the street or a conversation with a past fried, Lloyd and Harry know how to deliver the laughs.
This is slapstick comedy at its best, mixed with a few wicked one-liners that fans of the original will thoroughly enjoy. Even if you didn’t witness the originality of “Dumb and Dumber,” or you’re not a fan of what many consider adolescent laughs, “Dumb and Dumber To” is at the top of the game.
