WASHINGTON, D.C.—The shift of power in the nation’s Capital may be drastically changed in the next two days. In California, there are propositions on the ballot regarding gay marriage and the legal use of marijuana. It doesn’t matter what my opinions are on both of these measures; however, it does matter that we each get out to vote. “Cast your vote or stop complaining” is the motto used in many political ads. We face serious times and challenges in our nation. Not only is the State of California sinking in debt, but the nation faces an even bigger debt problem. Perhaps the fact that Washington’s economic advisors and Treasury continue to print money without ever dealing with the fact that we are overspending, which makes us not realize the serious consequences we face in a global economy. Whatever it is, it’s time to tell our politicians that it’s enough already, now solve these issues facing our nation and stop playing partisan politics.

The fact that we have President Obama and a Democratic Congress in office may have finally brought the fiscal mess we face to some people’s consideration. However, these problems started under then President Ronald Reagan and the Democratic Congress he worked with, when our deficit reached for the first time over a trillion dollars. In fact, it went from $800 billion in 1980 to $3 trillion in 1988, and there were no Tea Party protests or outcry against big government.

Whatever has caused this shift in public opinion about our astronomical federal deficit, it is necessary to tackle this problem at this time and this election may become the catalyst for Washington D.C.’s politicians to finally be forced to make the tough choices and cut the nation’s deficit and also to reorganize our entitlements, which must include Social Security and Medicare, in order to be able to sustain payments to citizens in the decades to come.

If there is one thing I would like to see when this election is finally over on the evening of November 2, it is, I’d like to see the partisan nation, which only mirrors the partisan Congress, stop the racist rhetoric, stop demagoguery and work on healing the nation. The people who frankly have received far too much attention over the past two years have been people that do not wish our nation the best; they only hate what they fear and drag the rest of us into despair and hopelessness.

Our nation must embrace the hope we once embodied. China and India’s economies now rival our own. It is perhaps the fact that we, along with Europeans, live in fear, while the Islamic world lives in hatred and Asia now embraces hope for the future. That was once the American way. No matter who the president was, or the party in power, we are the nation that led the global Industrial age as well as the Information age with ingenuity, hard work and determination. Now we whine and call our president names and hate the fact that we are the only nation on the planet that still embodies diversity and at one time, great hope for our future. Many hope for the return of the nation to our youth tomorrow, as it seems lost today in our elderly population.

Please remember our troops who remain in Afghanistan and Iraq, who fight for our safety and security. May they come home soon in victory.
