UNITED STATES—After nearly a month, the federal government shutdown continues. President Trump Donald and the Republicans are standing firm on border security.

On January 16 Nancy Pelosi wrote a letter to President Trump suggesting that he forego the State of the Union address planned for Tuesday, January 29. Pelosi cited lack of security as her reasoning in a letter she wrote, where she indicated “both the U.S. Secret Service and The Department of Homeland Security have not been funded for 26 days now.”

“Sadly, given security concerns and unless government reopens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has reopened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union Address in writing to the Congress on January 29th,” said Pelosi.

On January 17, President Trump responded to Pelosi suggesting she may reconsider a public relations trip to Brussels, Egypt and Afghanistan utilizing a military place.

“Due to the Shutdown, I am sorry to inform you that your trip to Brussels, Egypt, and Afghanistan has been postponed. We will reschedule this seven-day excursion when the Shutdown is over. In light of the 800,000 great American workers not receiving pay, I am sure you would agree that postponing this public relations event is totally appropriate. I also feel that, during this period, it would be better if you were in Washington negotiating with me and joining the Strong Border Security movement to end the Shutdown. Obviously, if you would like to make your journey by flying commercial, that would certainly be your prerogative,” said Trump in a letter to Pelosi.

Pelosi indicated that the women and children at the border are not a threat to the country, and asked for their protection. Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer spoke publicly regarding ending the federal shutdown and referred to the border wall as “Trump’s Obsession.”
