UNITED STATES—Mother’s Day is just around the corner, which means it’s time to start gathering ideas for meals, treats, and gifts. Every year, I find myself at a loss for what to do for my mother on her special day. I’ve pored over websites in search of the perfect purse, makeup, or shoes. I’ve bought boxes of chocolate and bouquets of flowers, I’m not even certain she’ll like, though of course, she always expresses her appreciation.

Recently, I’ve realized that one of my favorite ways of expressing my love and gratitude is through time: spending the morning at the dining table, over brunch and coffee, dedicating hours to making a personalized, one-of-a-kind card, baking desserts that will both please and impress my mom.

What better way to celebrate Mother’s Day than to shower your mother with homemade food and gifts? Here are a few ideas that are fun, unique, and sure to please!

Pancakes are a classic, delicious breakfast, but crepes take it to another level. Surprisingly easy to make, they can be eaten plain or dressed up with fruit. In this case, fresh blueberry curd makes an indulgent addition to the crepes, and lemon zest adds a bit of tang. Try your hand at this recipe here.

Edible Fruit Bouquet, from Juju Sprinkles

I’ve always admired the colorful arrangements of pineapples, strawberries, and melons, shaped to look like flower bouquets. As it turns out, they can easily be made at home, with the aid of a melon baller, cookie cutters, and wooden skewers. Various fruits are thinly sliced, cut into stars and flowers, and arranged in layers to form a lovely bouquet. A bonus is that this can be created by hand for a fraction of the cost at stores. Find the steps here.

A thoughtful gift basket full of Mom’s favorite items will certainly be well-received. Baskets can be filled with snacks, coffee beans, bottles of wine, kitchen tools, or spa products for a pampering session. They can easily be customized to fit each person’s tastes, whether they enjoy cooking, gardening, or entertaining. Best of all, the gifts can be used at one’s leisure. Some great basket ideas can be found here.

Regardless of the brunch, desserts, or gifts we choose, Mother’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to express our appreciation toward the women who have loved, supported, and shaped us into who we are today.
