BEVERLY HILLS – A glider carrying two men, one a Beverly Hills resident, crashed near the city of Wrightwood on March 15.
According to Lieutenant Darren Harris of the Palmdale Sheriff’s Department, the glider left the Crystal
Air Airport early in the morning whilst being towed by a more powerful aircraft.
After the glider had been released by the tow, it quickly lost altitude. The pilot, a 57-year-old male from Alhambra, was forced to make an emergency landing in a remote mountainous area southwest of Wrightwood.
Both the pilot and the passenger, a 53-year-old resident of Beverly Hills, sustained some minor injuries as a result of the crash. The Palmdale Sheriff’s Department and the department’s Aero Bureau responded to the crash, and they were able to rescue both men and fly the pilot to a local hospital to be treated. The passenger denied any medical assistance.
Lt. Harris noted in the news release that the crash was being investigated by the Aero Bureau, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
