HOLLYWOOD—There were a lot of new offerings at the box-office this past weekend. That is a rarity the week after the big Memorial Day holiday weekend. You had the sequel “Godzilla: King of Monsters,” “Ma” and “Rocketman” all vying for the top spot and moviegoers money. However, it was a monster that reigned supreme. “Godzilla: King of Monsters” dethroned the live-action version of “Aladdin’ to claim the top spot at the box-office with $49 million.

That is a far cry from the $93 million its predecessor earned in 2014. Perhaps it was the fact, that the 2014 “Godzilla” was so bad in my opinion, moviegoers weren’t willing to give the sequel a shot. I expect “King of Monsters” to lose its top spot at the box-office with another hotly anticipated sequel hitting theaters next week. Dropping to second place was “Aladdin” with $42.3 million. After two weeks in theaters, the movie has already crossed the $100 million mark at the domestic box-office.

Debuting in third place was the musical biopic of icon Elton John, “Rocketman” with an impressive $25 million. The flick has earned some rave reviews from critics, and it was apparent the R-rating didn’t stop audiences from flocking to the flick. Another movie that had an impressive weekend at the box-office was the horror thriller, “Ma” starring Octavia Spencer which landed in fourth place with $18.2 million. With the thriller costing a mere $5 million to make, I think it’s safe to safe it has more than tripled its investment.

Rounding out the top five was the sequel “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” with $11 million. As stated earlier, another hotly anticipated sequel arrives at the multiplex on June 7, in what is being deemed the end of the latest universe in the “X-Men” saga with “Dark Phoenix.” I expect it to rise to the top spot of the box-office, but how much it earns is up in the air.
