SANTA MONICA—We’re getting closer to awards season America. The nominees for the 2018 Independent Spirit Awards were announced on Tuesday, November 21 with the drama “Call Me by Your Name” leading all contenders with a total of 6 nominations including Best Feature. The thriller “Get Out” picked up 5 nominations, while the film “Good Time” earned 5 nominations as well.
In the Best Feature category the contenders include: “Get Out,” “Call Me by Your Name,” “Lady Bird,” “The Rider” and “The Florida Project.” The category for Best Director is a big one with Jordan Peele “Get Out,” facing off against Luca Guadagnino “Call Me by Your Name,” Sean Baker “The Florida Project,” Jonas Carpignano “A Ciambra,” Benny and Josh Safdie “Good Time” and Chloe Zhao “The Rider.” Nominees for Best First Feature include “Columbus,” “Ingrid Goes West,” “Oh Lucy!,” “Patti Cake$,” and “Menashe.”
For Best Female Lead the contenders include Frances McDormand “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” Salma Hayek “Beatriz at Dinner,” Margot Robbie “I, Tonya,” Regina Williams “Life and Nothing More” and Shinobu Terajima “Oh Lucy!” Nominees for Best Male Lead are Timothee Chalamet “Call Me by Your Name,” Daniel Kaluuya “Get Out,” Harris Dickinson “Beach Rats,” Robert Pattinson “Good Time” and James Franco “The Disaster Artist.”
Nominees in the Best Supporting Female race include Allison Janney “I, Tonya,” Holly Hunter “The Big Sick,” Laurie Metcalf “Lady Bird,” Lois Smith “Majorie Prime” and Taliah Lennie Webster “Good Time.” Vying in the Best Supporting Male category are Benny Safdie “Good Time,” Barry Keoghan “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” Sam Rockwell “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” Armie Hammer “Call Me by Your Name” and Nnamdi Asomugha “Crown Heights.”
Contenders in the Best Screenplay race include Greta Gerwig “Lady Bird,” Azazel Jacobs “The Lovers,” Martin McDoangh “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” Mike White “Beatriz at Dinner” and Jordan Peele “Get Out.” Best First Screenplay nominees include Kris Avedisian “Donald Cried,” Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanijani “The Big Sick,” Kogonada “Columbus,” David Branson Smith and Matt Spicer “Ingrid Goes West” and “Ingrid Jungermann “Women Who Kill.”
Vying for the John Cassavetes Award are the films “Dayveon,” “A Ghost Story,” “Life and Nothing More,” “Most Beautiful Island” and “The Transfiguration.” The prize for the Robert Altman Award will be handed out to the director, casting directors and ensemble cast of the period drama “Mudbound.”
The 33rd Independent Spirit Awards will be handed out on Saturday, March 3 at inside a tent near the Santa Monica Beach. The ceremony will be hosted for the second consecutive year by comics Nick Kroll and John Mulaney. The awards will air live on IFC.
