WEST HOLLYWOOD—Indio Falconer Downey, 21, the son of actor Robert Downey Jr., pleaded guilty to a cocaine possession charge while in court on September 12.

According to reports, when Indio entered his plea in court, Judge Keith L. Schwartz of the Los Angles Superior Court announced his case would be dismissed as long as he stays out of trouble for 18 months.

His drug charge stemmed from a June 29 incident where he was arrested inWest Hollywood shortly after 2 p.m. near La Cienega and Santa Monica Boulevard. Authorities stopped Indio after spotting him smoking from a pipe.

He posted bail and entered a drug program for treatment. Robert Downey Jr. has had his own drug problems in the past battling addiction including cocaine, heroin and marijuana, which halted the actor’s career in the late 90s and early 2000s. The actor went to rehab on multiple occasions to get treatment for his addiction, and kicked his addiction in 2001, revitalizing his film career with a sting of box-office hits that included “Gothika,” “Good Night, and Good Luck” and “Zodiac.” In 2002, the actor entered a drug program and got sober after spending time in jail twice.

Robert Downey Jr. released a statement that read, “Unfortunately, there’s a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it. Also, there is a lot of family support and understanding, and we’re all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he’s capable of being. We’re grateful to the Sheriff’s Department for their intervention, and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale.”
