BEVERLY HILLS—While most of us here in Beverly Hills have “been there, done that,” it is thanks to television, comedian Rip Taylor has filled our living rooms and our hearts with joy and laughter. He has starred on Broadway, major cities of the US and Vegas, and now, in his one man show playing at the El Portal Theater in NoHo, Taylor again proves that he is more than a comedian and “King of Pandemonium,” he is also a brilliant actor and captivating raconteur.
“It Ain’t All Confetti” is better than reading Rip’s colorful life story. It’s seeing it and sharing it with him first hand—funny, poignant, shocking, sweet and spicy. I think good things will happen for this hybrid show of burlesque, Vegas and theater rolled into one. It is directed by David Galligan.
The venue for this show at the El Portal is their small experimental theater, which offers a very cozy and personal experience for the audience. In spite of its diminutive size, the sound on opening night left a great deal to be desired, as the celebrity-filled house missed a lot of Rip’s rapid fire material. Hopefully, this has been corrected.
The show will only run through the June 6, so make haste to catch a good evening with a delightful friend. The prices are sooooo right and the show is great fun.
Kudos to Pegge Forrest and Jay Irwin for opening their new season with Rip Taylor. We look forward to a wonderfully rounded season with Fritz Coleman in his one man show, the premiere of a new comedy by Renee Taylor and Joe Bologna, the legendary and irrepressible Debbie Reynolds, and for the holiday season, “Cinderella,” a traditional English Christmas pantomime produced by the famous Lithgow Family.
