SANTA MONICA—On Tuesday, July 23, the Santa Monica Fire Department issued an alert via social media that an electrical storm with lightning was reported in Santa Monica. Los Angeles County lifeguards also spotted lightening in Marina Del Rey, which led to the closure of all Los Angeles County beaches until the storm ended.

A warning was issued to evacuate all ocean and beach sand areas as well as the Santa Monica Pier to seek shelter.

“Lightning strike observed in Marina Del Rey. LA County Lifeguards are clearing the beaches, please seek shelter inside until the storm passes” tweeted the LA County Lifeguards on Twitter.

At 10:30 a.m., beaches from Torrance to Manhattan Beach were reopened. Not soon after, all beaches were reopened by 11 a.m.
