HOLLYWOOD—Nominees for the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Nominees were announced on Wednesday, December 14 from the Pacific Design Center by actress Sophia Bush of the NBC show “Chicago P.D.” and actor/rapper Common.

Leading all contenders was the film “Manchester by the Sea” which picked up a total of 4 nominations including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Followed close behind was “Moonlight” and “Fences” which picked up 3 nominations apiece.

Leading contenders in the TV side of things were “Stranger Things,” “The People v. O.J. Simpson” and “Black-ish.” I must say this might be the most surprising nominations yet this season, which could be an indicator of where things could be headed in regards to Oscar predictions.

First, the Lead Actress race sees Amy Adams as a serious contender in the race, as well as Emily Blunt who was fantastic in “The Girl on the Train.” However, those additions, means the verdict still stands for Taraji P. Henson “Hidden Figures” and Ruth Negga “Loving,” Jessica Chastain “Miss Sloane” and Isabelle Huppert “Elle” who all failed to land a nomination.

Surprising that “Hidden Figures” landed a nomination for Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture, yet only one nomination was picked up by actress Octavia Spencer. Right now I think the race for Best Picture is a battle between “Manchester by the Sea” and “Moonlight,” but that could change with the public perception for “Hidden Figures” and “Fences” as they arrive in theaters in the coming week.
