MALIBU—The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a ballot measure that will allow for the continuation of funding for parks and open spaces in the greater Los Angeles area, according to a press release from the city of Malibu on July 11.

The goal of the measure is to meet the needs of parks and open spaces through “creating safe, neighborhood parks and preserving our precious remaining open space,” according to the Our Parks LA website.

On July 5, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to place the Los Angeles County Parks Measure on the November 2016 ballot. Supervisors listened to advocates from around the county explain what parks and open spaces do for the greater Los Angeles area including:

– Protect clean water resources, including rivers and creeks

– Reduce gang activity, and provide safe places to play

– Ensure drinking water is safe at park and recreation centers

– Remove asbestos, mold, and lead paint from aging recreation centers

– Protect and preserve parks and natural areas

– Keep beaches open, clean, and safe

– Supports funding for high need areas

Voters will be able to vote on the measure during the November 8 ballot. If the measure is approved by voters then it will authorize an annual special tax on all taxable property in Los Angeles County. The special tax will be 1.5 cents per square foot of structural improvement on each parcel.

The Our Parks LA website lists some highlights of the ballot including:
