HOLLYWOOD—Though it’s still about a month away for the official summer solstice, Memorial Day Weekend marks the unofficial cultural start of the season. Everyone will be taking advantage of the long coming weekend to catch on some sleep, shop some incredible sales to get all the gear that will be necessary for the upcoming heat waves, throw a barbecue or just relax wherever they find themselves. Memorial Day is a day to remember those that died in active military, traditionally observed on May 30, but now officially observed on the last Monday in May, which happens to be May 27.

So here are a few places to go on the long weekend: The 19th Annual Soul Beach Music Festival will be hosted in Aruba. It is jam-packed with musical performances by John Legend, Charlie Wilson, Ella Mai, H.E.R., the comedic brilliance of Deon Cole and special guest DJ Jazzy Jeff bringing the epitome of lit entertainment to the stage Memorial Day weekend, May 22-27. In Los Angeles, at the Avalon Hollywood & Bardot, you have the biggest collegiate event on May 26, with electro and techno.

On Memorial Day, you have a pool party at the W Los Angeles-West Beverly Hills on 930 Hilgard Avenue, from 12 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The JazzReggae Festival at UCLA will be held at UCLA, it’s held every year. This is a cultural, artistic and musical fiesta of jazz and reggae.

For those who want to remember, on May 27, you can join Battleship IOWA and crew to honor and remember our service members who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. It’s a free community event made possible with support from Supervisor Janice Hahn (Fourth District), the Port of Los Angeles, and in-kid support from Councilmember Joe Buscaino.

They will have food trucks, live music and a DJ, face painting, military vehicles. The OC Music Festival, is an outdoor music festival for fans to gather, jam and camp. The festival will be held in Silverado, California. Two stages, three days from May 24 thru May 27.

Want to catch a movie? A 35mm version of Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park” will be shown at the Vista Theatre on Sunset Drive in Los Angeles. It’s a special Memorial Day matinee. Just a few days from now, on May 24, “The Poison Rose” will be released in theaters. The film is inspired by classic film noir, Carson Philips, an ex-football star turned PI, who has a soft spot for a lady in distress. The movie stars Morgan Freeman. If you are in the mood for some horror, sci-fi, look no further than “Brightburn.” The film is directed by David Yarovesky and is about a child from another world that crash-landed on Earth, however, becomes a hero to mankind.

On the same day, you also have “Booksmart.” The movie is directed by Olivia Wilde and stars Kaitlyn Dever, Beanie Feldstein, Jessica Williams. The film captures an high school graduation, two academic superstars and best friends. They realize they should have worked less and played more. Determined not to fall short of their peers, the girls try to cram four years of fun into one night.

Looking for adventure and family fun, look for “Aladdin.” The movie is directed by Madonna’s ex-hubby, Guy Ritchie. It’s about a kindhearted street urchin and a power-hungry Grand Vizier vie for a magic lamp that has the power to make their deepest wishes come true. It stars Will Smith, Mena Massoud, and Naomi Scott, among others.

On May 31, you have “Rocketman” which will be released. A musical fantasy about the fantastical human story of Elton John’s breakthrough years. The film is directed by Dexter Fletcher and stars Taron Egerton, Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard.
