HOLLYWOOD HILLS — The FlyAway Bus Service is expected to open a new site in Hollywood, according to a presentation from December 2.
The presentation to the Board of Airport Commissioners of the Los Angeles World Airports from Capital Programming and Planning reveals plans to open four new sites in the Southland for the FlyAway Bus service. Citing a projected increase in passengers to LAX, with numbers going as high as almost 80 million for 2015, the opening of the sites is the reaction to the expected demand to aid the four sites already in operation.
The plan is to have all the new sites operational by 2015, with the earliest being the Santa Monica site, expected to be open by summer 2014. It has reported to operate in a location approved by the city near their City Center.
The Hollywood site is slated for an opening in the fall 2014. This location is currently being discussed, according to the presentation, with Councilman Mitch O’Farrell to be located on Vine Street across a city-owned parking structure, south of Hollywood Boulevard. Taking into account the proximity of this site with the one off of La Brea Avenue and Exposition Boulevard, the presentation proposes that the Hollywood site could use shuttles for the Expo site to also serve the Hollywood stop to cut down on costs. If all goes as planned, both the Santa Monica site and the Hollywood site are expected to have ridership numbers similar to that of the Union Station site, which saw a ridership of 461,100 for the 2012/2013 fiscal year.
The FlyAway Bus Service has been operating since 1975 when the it’s first site in Van Nuys was constructed. Fares for the service range between $6 and $10, depending on the location. The service is open seven days a week and shuttles passengers between LAX and sites in Van Nuys, Westwood, and Downtown Los Angeles.
