WESTWOOD—The Mormon Temple on Santa Monica Boulevard, a local landmark, is letting its lush lawn go brown in order to conserve water.

In an emailed statement, spokesperson for the Church of Latter Day Saints Doug Andersen said, “We are pleased to join others across Los Angeles and California in reducing water consumption during this historic drought. We have also reduced water usage for the past three years with a restricted ‘dawn to dusk’ watering schedule as established by the city.”

These cutbacks come on the heels of new restrictions from the state water board, which mandate that heavy water users could be fined.

“We hope and pray that the weather conditions change so we can restore the beauty of the temple grounds,” Andersen said.
