WESTMINISTER—The Orange County–Deaf Equal Access Foundation (OC-DEAF) will be hosting their 2nd Annual Sertoma Fantasy Ice Skating Camp. The program is for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing youth between the ages 6 to 17. Campers using oral methods and/or cochlear implants are also welcome. The camp will be held from August 18 to August 21.

Sertoma stands for Service to Mankind. It was founded in 1912 and is the third oldest civic organization in the United States. According to Sertoma’s website, the mission statement says they strive “to improve the quality of life today for those at risk or impacted by hearing loss through education and support.”

According to the brochure, “campers will learn the basics of ice skating, which includes both figure skating and hockey, by professional coaches and assisted volunteers helpers. All volunteers are pre-screened.”

“Trained sign language interpreters will be present at all times throughout each day on and off the ice to assist in communication. On Thursday, the camp will conclude with an awards ceremony and a pizza party.”

The four-day camp costs $40 to register and includes skates, lessons and snacks. Applicants who signed up before July 15 received a $10 discount. The camp hours will start at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at 12:00 p.m. A registration form can be found at http://www.westminstericerink.com/files/Sertoma_2014.pdf. Spots for camp are limited to the first 100 people who apply.

Campers are advised to wear long pants, a long sleeve shirt, a jacket, thin socks, closed toe shoes, gloves, and a backpack. Optional items to bring are knee pads, elbow pads and a hat or helmet.

The camp will take place at The Rinks Westminster Ice on 13071 Springdale Street in Westminster, CA.
