SANTA MONICA—Baywatch Santa Monica and Baywatch Del Rey rescued an overturned sailboat on Sunday, May 3.

Heavy winds caused distress for many sailors in the area. A group of people had their 45-foot sailboat turn sideways because of the heavy winds. Four people were onboard the boat, including the captain who fell overboard, noted Brian Hogue, a rescue boat captain with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. There were no reports of any serious injuries. The boat suffered a broken keel.

A severe weather alert has been issued for several beach cities, effective until Tuesday, May 5 at 11 p.m. All areas between Manhattan Beach and Palos Verdes are expected to be effected. Manhattan Beach to Santa Monica Beach is anticipating high surf up to 6 feet. Malibu, Zuma, and Palos Verdes are also under a high surf advisory, with waves up to 8 feet.
