WESTWOOD—The water main break on July 28 that caused massive problems on the campus of UCLA was officially fixed on Monday, August 4, when Sunset Blvd. was re-opened to the public. Pauley Pavilion, where most of the basketball games are held on the UCLA campus suffered extensive damage from the inflow of water.

On August 1, UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero indicated the entire floor would be replaced by the fall basketball season.

“Let me begin by once again thanking all of you for the outpouring of support, concern and offers of assistance we have received as we continue to work through the consequences of Tuesday’s flood,” Guerrero said in a note to the UCLA Bruin community. “Officials and staff from the City of Los Angeles, the UCLA campus, primarily Campus Recreation, and from our Athletics Department have been diligently working 24-hours a day since the water main break.”

He indicated that the playing surface, locker rooms, the entire wood floor would be replaced with a new state-of-the-art court. The new floor is expected to be completed by the end of October.

UCLA Chancellor Gene D. Block indicated in a statement on August 1, “We will continue to look for ways to help our students, staff and faculty who have been affected by this incident. We also will continue the cleanup, assess the damage and return UCLA to normal operations —and keep you informed through the UCLA websites mentioned above. Thank you for your patience and for all you have done to support these efforts.”
