LOS ANGELES—A female Los Angeles Police Department officer was hospitalized Thursday, December 28 after being shot in an ambush-style attack.

The shooting took place near Linwood and Hartford at roughly 9:50 p.m.  Officers from the LAPD’s Rampart Division were seeking to implement a pedestrian stop when a man (who was unrelated to the investigation) opened fire, striking the female officer. According to reports, the officer was shot in the thigh.

She was transported to LAC+USC Medical Center. The injury was assessed as being non-life threatening, and the officer remains in stable condition.

In a statement, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck said, “[the officer] is in remarkably good spirits.” The dangers of this profession should never be lost on any of us,” he added.

It is not yet known who committed the shooting. The LAPD reports they have one person in custody and have recovered one firearm in connection with the shooting. Authorities are continuing to search for suspects involved in the incident.
