Brawl At SMHS Raises Security Concerns

BEVERLY HILLS—Following a January postgame brawl between students from Santa Monica High School and Beverly Hills High School, a spotlight has been placed on Tuesday’s matchup between the rival schools.

Concern for student safety has peaked after footage surfaced of the brawl, taking place in a parking lot near SMHS on January 23. The video depicts students from both schools in a heated confrontation, one that led to the alleged vandalism of a student’s Mercedes Benz.

The conflict took place following a victory for visiting BHHS in a nearby parking lot.

The initial trouble reportedly began during the third quarter of a game that BHHS won, as students were seen trading insults and escalating the already tense atmosphere.

In response to last month’s brawl, an increased police presence will be on hand for Tuesday night’s game between the two schools. Five police squad cars will be present, with representatives from both Santa Monica and Beverly Hills present to ensure the safety of spectators and athletes.
