STUDIO CITY—Rapper Mac Miller was found dead on Friday, September 7, in his home located at 11600 block of Valleycrest Drive in Studio City, TMZ reported.

He died from an apparent substance abuse overdose. He was 26 years old and set to start a tour next month. According to a press release from the County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner – Coroner, Miller was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:51 a.m.

Mac Miller, born Malcolm James McCormick is originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He gained popularity from his mixtapes such as “K.I.D.S” and “Faces,” which were highly downloaded. Miller’s album, “Swimming,” which was released in August received strong reviews debuting at No. 3 on the Billboard charts. In 2011, Miller’s album “Blue Slide Park” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts.

In addition to a strong presence in the music industry, Miller had his own reality show, “Mac Miller and the Most Dope Family” which ran on MTV2 from 2013-2014. The artist released a documentary called “Stopped Making Excuses.” In the documentary, Miller said, “Overdosing is just not cool.”

Throughout his career, Miller struggled with substance abuse. In 2012, he admitted to Complex  magazine that it was difficult for him to quit the promethazine and codeine fueled drug. In a 2013 interview, Miller told Complex “I love lean; it’s great.”

Miller was previously in a relationship with singer Ariana Grande that ended in May 2018. He was arrested later that month for drunk driving. Despite substance abuse issues, Miller’s death shocked many celebrities and fans across the country. 

Following his death, Miller’s family released the following statement:

“He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends and fans. Thank you for your prayers. Please respect our privacy. There are no further details as to the cause of his death at this time.”

Fellow Pittsburgh native and rapper Wiz Khalifa tweeted, “Praying for Mac’s family and that he rest easy 🙏🏽👼🏽 #pgh #412.”

Miller’s former ex, Ariana Grande posted a picture of Miller on her Instagram page without a caption. An exact cause of death for the rapper has not been disclosed, but an autopsy is pending.
