HOLLYWOOD—It was Easter holiday weekend, but that did not stop people from hitting the theaters. With a bevy of new flicks arriving would “Pacific Rim Uprising” maintain its grip on the box-office? Nope. Why? A guy named Steven Spielberg and his sci-fi adventure, “Ready Player One” rose to the top spot at theaters debuting to a tune of $53 million since it arrival in theaters on Thursday. The video game extravaganza starring Tye Sheridan and Olivia Cooke cost over $150 million to make, so it’ll need lots of word-of-mouth buzz to recoup those expenses. The film did manage to do strong business overseas with nearly $120 million.

Nabbing second place was the Tyler Perry psychological thriller “Acrimony” with $17.1 million. Quite disappointing for a flick that has been heavily advertised and starring Taraji P. Henson; I expected larger numbers especially with Perry being a big name. Proving even though it has been dethroned from the top spot in theaters, “Black Panther” is still adding to its tally with $11 million to bring its domestic total to over $650 million.

The Christian-based flick “I Can Only Imagine” has found a stellar audience because the dough keeps raking in. The film landed in fourth place with $10.8 million. In just 3 weeks, the film is certain to cross the $60 million mark at the start of the new work week. Last week’s box-office champ, “Pacific Rim Uprising” dropped to fifth place with $9.2 million.

This weekend sees the release of the comedy “Blockers” starring Leslie Mann and John Cena. Also arriving in theaters is the horror flick “A Quiet Place” starring Emily Blunt and John Krasinski. Gotta say, the buzz surrounding “A Quiet Place” is pretty big America.
