BEVERLY HILLS — Residents are encouraged by the city to recycle their Christmas trees responsibly.

Unused trees have to be disposed of, and the city would like residents to know how to do it properly. According to a press release from the City ofBeverly Hills on Tuesday, December 24, the first way is to have the tree cut up into smaller pieces that can be placed inside the green waste container designated for yard waste. If the tree is too large or if a green waste container is not owned, the tree can be placed in the alley next to the trash can. Before the tree is thrown out, residents must be sure they have removed all ornaments, lights and stands from the tree.

The Bureau of Sanitation offers a third way of disposing of Christmas trees. On January 5, 2014, residents of the county can bring their trees to either a Recreation & Park or Fire Station location, who will readily accept the trees. Residents should note that not all locations will be open and that the event will only last for that one day. In addition, no giveaways will be available, and no wrapping will be accepted for disposal. For more information, people can visit http://www.lacitysan.org/tree-recycle.htm.

According to AB 939, the California Integrated Waste Management Act, all cities and counties in the state must work towards a waste diversion rate of 50 percent for every year after 2000. The city of Beverly Hills boasts a waste diversion rate of over 70 percent.
