SANTA MONICA—On August 10, the Santa Monica City Council adopted an ordinance that prohibits smoking at all locations on the world-famous Santa Monica Pier. The ordinance passed unanimously and is an amendment of chapter 4.4 of the Santa Monica Municipal Code.

Smoking had previously been allowed in specific areas of the pier, but this ban will now cover the entire pier. The pier now joins the Third Street Promenade, the Farmers’ Market and any outdoor beach, as outdoor smoke-free areas in Santa Monica.

The same City Council meeting saw another ban pass pertaining to smoking in multi-unit residential properties. The ordinance was made in an act to expand protection from second-hand smoke. The property owner of any multi-unit residential property will have to post notice of the smoking ban by December 1, and will be able to designate an outside smoking area as long as the area is 20 feet away from the property.

The next Santa Monica City Council meeting will be held at the Santa Monica City Hall on September 14, and will begin at 5:45 p.m.
