SANTA MONICA—On Tuesday, August 6, Santa Monica is celebrating National Night Out which will start at 5:30 p.m. and go until 8 p.m. This year the theme is “Heart of the City.” National Night Out is the Santa Monica Police Department’s opportunity to engage with the community. They are inviting the public to meet in front of City Hall at Ken Genser Square. The event is aimed at celebrating the relationship between the police and the citizens of the city.

National Night Out is also held in cities and towns across the country in an effort to connect the authorities with the communities they serve. Santa Monica’s National Night Out plans on showcasing various police department vehicles, meet and greets with officers and police dogs, music, free food, community art and other activities that aim to be family-friendly.

Due to the event, the Big Blue Bus Route 5 will be on detour beginning at 3 p.m. until the end of service. Buses will travel the regular route to Main Street and Olympic Drive, but will detour and turn right on Olympic Drive, left on 4th Street, left on Colorado Avenue, right on 2nd Street and then resume its regular route. The stop NB on Main Street at Olympic Drive will be missed.
