SANTA MONICA—The City of Santa Monica is offering workshop presentations to the public for the concept designs of the city’s new park constructions.

The concept designs were initially introduced to the public on September 19, in the east wing of the Santa Monica Civic Center Auditorium, where around 100 visitors attended. The new parks are to be created directly across the street from Santa Monica’s City Hall, on 1685 Main St., and will be located on about seven acres in the heart of the city.  Features of the designs include forests with umbrella pine, acacia and oak trees; flowering meadows; trellises; sculpted topography; a hillside amphitheater; areas for running, cycling, and rollerblading; outdoor cafes; climbing walls and children’s play areas, among many others.

The new public sites are intended to build significant connections between the Civic Center area and the famed Santa Monica Pier and Pacific Palisades Park, and to strengthen a sense of social, cultural and recreational enrichment among community members.

Those who were unable to be present at the September 19 preview may still look forward to attending a second gathering on November 13 to address the parks’ schematic designs and in January 2011 to discuss design development.  Participants are also offered a chance to share additional feedback by reviewing Workshop Presentation #2 and taking a brief survey at smciviccenterparks.com/storage/Presentation2-CD.pdf. More detailed illustrations of the parks’ concept designs are also available atsmciviccenterparks.com/storage/CDoptions.pdf.
