SANTA MONICA—According to the California Department of Finance, from January 2016 to January 2017, Santa Monica’s population increased from approximately 93,282 to 93,834;  a .59 percent increase.

Santa Monica is ranked the 80th-largest city in the state of California behind San Marcos, which has a population of 94,042 and ahead of Carson, which has a population of 93,674. Los Angeles still remains the largest city with a population of 4,041,707, a 1.1 percent increase.

The state of California had a population increase of 0.9 percent to 39,523,613. If population numbers continue to rise, the state could see its population reach 40 million by the end of 2017 or the beginning of 2018.

The smallest city in California, Amador (located in Northern California) did not change and still has a population of 193.

Since 2006, Santa Monica has seen a trend of an increasing population. In 2011, it passed the 90,000 mark. It is also ranked 222 of the state’s 482 cities in 2017 of population change by percentage.

Northern California saw the largest increase, rising 10.62 percent and reaching 7,772.

Housing units were also included in the information. In 2016, Santa Monica had a total of 52,082, and increased this year to 52,410. The vacancy rate in Santa Monica is 8 percent, with the average household having 1.9 people.
