MALIBU/SANTA MONICA—On January 19, the National Weather Service announced a coastal hazard message for the areas near Malibu, along with showers in Malibu and Santa Monica.

According to the National Weather Service Web site, Malibu is among the areas at risk for coastal flooding.  It is also likely that substantial beach erosion, along with the threat of damage to piers, will also occur. The web site further states that dangerous rip currents for all area beaches during the week of January 19-23 are predicted. It is advised that even the most experienced swimmers stay out of the water during this event.  Rocks and jetties will be especially dangerous because waves can unexpectedly sweep people into the water.

A coastal flood advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.  A coastal flood warning means that a flood is occurring or imminent. Coastal residents in the warned area are advised to be alert to rising water and to take necessary action for their safety and to protect their property.
