BEL AIR—Officials have indicated that the Skirball Fire – which has burned for more than six days over 420 acres is 85 percent contained as of Monday, December 11. All evacuation orders have been lifted.
As of Saturday, December 9, firefighters reported that 75 percent was contained. Reduced wind speeds assisted firefighting efforts over the weekend, and significant advances were made in curtailing the blaze.
The wildfire first began near Mulholland Drive on Wednesday, December 6 and destroyed six homes and damaged roughly a dozen others. Two firefighters were injured combating the conflagration. Both are expected to make a full recovery. No deaths were reported in connection with the Skirball Fire.
Evacuations were ordered for more than 40,000 residents last week as the fire raged on the east side of the 405 freeway. Residents were allowed to return to their homes Friday as the fire began to die down. There are currently no road closures in effect in the surrounding region. The Getty Center re-opened to the public on Friday, and the University of California – Los Angeles resumed classes for students on Friday as well. Both facilities shut down last week, as a precaution as the wildfire threat heightened.
