HOLLYWOOD—Memorial Day weekend 2018 proved that just because you have connections or strands of DNA to “Star Wars” does not guarantee box-office success. The stand-alone film “Solo: A Star Wars Story” struggled to cross the $100 million mark at the U.S. box-office during the four-day holiday weekend. That is a far cry from the massive success of “Rogue One,” “The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi” which all saw stellar success in theaters.

“Solo” amounted $83 million from Friday-Sunday, add in Monday’s total and the flick just barely crossed the $100 million mark at the domestic box-office with $103 million. On a global scale the flick earned around $140 million, so the action-adventure looks like it’ll take a massive tumble during its second weekend in theaters based on its performance during opening weekend.

Nabbing second place was last week’s victor “Deadpool 2” with $53 million for the holiday. In just 10 days, the R-rated adventure has tallied over $200 million at the domestic box-office. Landing in third place was “Avengers: Infinity War” with $20 million. The Marvel adventure has since earned over $621 million on the domestic scale. Fourth place was a victory for the comedy “Book Club” which added another $12 million to its total. Not the success that Paramount expected considering big names like Diane Keaton and Jane Fonda. To date the comedy has only earned around $34 million domestically.

Rounding out the top five was the comedy “Life of the Party” with a little over $7 million for the holiday weekend. Expect “Solo” to win the box-office this upcoming weekend as the pickings for new flicks are dire, with the “Adrift” hitting theaters. Will it dethrone “Solo?” Not a chance. Expect “Ocean’s 8” to dethrone “Solo” when it arrives at the multiplex on June 8.
