HOLLYWOOD—I had a hunch months ago that “Solo: A Star Wars Story” would not be the success so many expected it to be at the box-office. Well, I can officially say I was right. I noted last week that “Solo’s” success would be a direct result of how it performed during its second weekend in theaters, and man did the flick plummet.

“Solo: A Star Wars Story” held onto the top spot, but dropped more than 65 percent in the process. The film earned just over $29 million during its second weekend in theaters. To date the film has a domestic tally of just over $149 million. It will cross the $150 million mark by Monday, but I don’t see the flick crossing the $200 million mark in the United States before ending its run in theaters. The film is also struggling on a global scale, so I would argue don’t expect a sequel.

Nabbing second place was “Deadpool 2” with $23.3 million. To date the sequel has earned over $254 million at the domestic box-office. That definitely has to sting for “Solo” considering “Deadpool 2” is rated R! The only new debut of the weekend worth chatting about was “Adrift.” The film which is based on a true story, stars Shailene Woodley and Sam Clafin and landed in third place with $11.2 million. Proving that 2018 clearly belongs to the superheroes, “Avengers: Infinity War remains in the top five after 6 weeks in theaters. The sequel landed in fourth place adding another $10.4 million to its tally. To date “Infinity War” has earned over $643 million.

Rounding out the top five was the comedy “Book Club” with $6.8 million. Hmm, I didn’t even expect this flick to cross the $30 million mark, but it looks like it has found an audience that is entertained. Well, bid adieu to “Solo” because the female heist “Ocean’s 8” starring Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett arrives this weekend and it’s certain to take the top spot amongst moviegoers.
