PALO ALTO,CA—THE BIG GAME. No other rivalry can be called that, perhaps the most famous play in college football history occurred during this iconic matchup. This was the 118th time the Stanford Cardinals faced the Cal Golden Bears and Stanford prevailed by a score of 35-22 behind Running Back Christian McCaffrey, who amassed 389 all purpose yards. This breaks a school record, and is the most by any player during this current college football season.
With this victory, Stanford clinched a spot in the PAC-12 championship game to be held at Levi Stadium on December 5. They are the Champions of the PAC-12 North and will face the winner of the USC-UCLA game, to be held at the Coliseum on November 28. Stanford will have to face the fourth ranked Fighting Irish, Notre Dame next week. They have aspirations of reaching the playoffs after a great season.
A bright spot for the Golden Bears was QB Jared Goff, who threw for 386 yards while completing 37 of 54 attempts. He also notched two touchdowns and no interceptions. Stanford, with CFP dreams still alive as well, was too strong and Cal had no answer for the speedy McCaffrey.
In addition to his all purpose yards, he gained 192 yards on the ground, while QB Kevin Hogan was his usual steady self. Making virtually no mistakes while managing the game and making the occasional great play. A great victory for the Cardinals and congratulations on winning the “axe” for the sixth straight year.
