HOLLYWOOD—There were plenty of new movies vying for the top spot at the box-office this weekend, hoping to knockout “The Secret Life of Pets” from the top spot. In the end, it was the sequel “Star Trek Beyond” that won over moviegoers with an impressive $59.6 million to rise to #1. While those numbers are reasonable, they still fall below the numbers earned by “Star Trek Into Darkness” and “Star Trek” which both debuted with $70 million plus debuts.

“The Secret Life of Pets,” while dethroned still managed to bring in $29.3 million in its third weekend in theaters. So far the animated flick has earned over $260 million at the domestic box-office. It was a nail-bitter for third place as the horror flick “Lights Out” just edged out “Ghostbusters” by mere thousands. While both flicks earned around $21.6 million, it looks like “Lights Out” is slightly edging out “Ghostbusters,” but those spots could swap once official numbers are released on Monday.

Speaking of “Ghostbusters,” the remake has earned over $87 million in just 2 weeks in theaters. This is welcome news for Sony which really needs this flick to prove it was worthy of the remake in the first place. If the paranormal crosses the $100 million mark at the domestic box-office, we can expect to maybe see a sequel in the near future.

Rounding out the top five was the animated flick “Ice Age: Collison Course” which bombed people. I mean the fifth chapter in the franchise, only managed to earn $21 million. Guessing people were more focused on “Finding Dory” and “The Secret Life of Pets” instead of “Ice Age.”

This weekend sees the return of Matt Damon in the highly anticipated “Jason Bourne,” and Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell proved they can indeed be raunchy in the comedy “Bad Moms.”
