HOLLYWOOD—For the third consecutive weekend, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” was victorious at the box-office maintaining the #1 spot bringing in another $68.4 million during the elongated New Year’s holiday weekend. The eighth installment in the franchise has since crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box-office. On a domestic scale, the film has earned over $500 million.
While “Star Wars” proves to be a titan, a remake of a popular 1995 flick is beginning to gain plenty of steam. “Jumanji: Return to the Jungle” had an impressive second week in theaters earning close to $66.5 million during the four-day holiday weekend, placing it just mere millions from claiming the top spot at the box-office. The action-adventure has since amounted over $187 million domestically. Not bad for a film, where remakes and sequels have not done so well in 2017 in theaters.
“Pitch Perfect 3” managed to hold onto its third place spot adding another $21 million to its tally to bring its domestic total close to $70 million. It has been touted as the final chapter in the franchise, and based on box-office receipts I would have to agree. The musical, “The Greatest Showman” landed in fourth place adding $20 million to its total to bring its domestic total to just over the $50 million mark.
Don’t expect any major releases in coming weeks, as more indie and awards worthy flicks are released in theaters. So next week it looks like “The Last Jedi” will reign supreme yet again, unless “Jumanji” finds a way to unseat it.
