HOLLYWOOD—It was a biopic that reigned supreme at the multiplex this week. The film “Straight Outta Compton,” which chronicled the rise and fall of the rap group N.W.A. debuted to an impressive $60.2 million during its opening weekend.
Early estimates predicted the flick earning $56.1 million during the three-day weekend. With that debut, I would argue it’s safe to say the flick will retain the number one spot at the box-office this coming weekend.
Nabbing second place was Tom Cruise and “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” with $17 million. After nearly 3 weeks in theaters, the fifth installment in the franchise is certain to cross the $150 million mark by the end of the week.
Debuting in third place is the spy-thriller “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” with $13.5 million, slightly underperforming against expectations. Proving that not all superheroes are super is “Fantastic Four” which dropped close to 70 percent in its second week to take in only $8 million. In less than 10 days, the film has only earned around $42 million.
A major loss for 20th Century Fox who expected the flick to soar to new heights. Rounding out the top five was the psychological thriller “The Gift” which added another $6.5 million to its tally. Arriving in theaters this weekend is the sequel “Sinister 2” and “Hitman: Agent 47.”
