MALIBU—High surf is expected for southwest California beaches from Tuesday, November 8 to Thursday, November 10.

The National Weather Service indicated that high surf will be expected to hit along the Los Angeles County coast throughout the week. A large west to northwest swell will begin to move into the southwest California coastal waters on Tuesday afternoon. High surf will affect the central coast starting Tuesday evening and begin to reach the peak on Wednesday which would build up to 8 to 10 feet. Another large westerly swell will cause surf to build again during the weekend.

“Large waves and strong rip currents will increase the risk of ocean drowning. Sneakers waves can suddenly wash people off of beaches, rocks or jetties and capsize small boats nearshore. Large shore break can lead to injury and long wave runup,” the NWS states.

High surf advisory will remain in effect from 4 a.m. Wednesday to 9 p.m. PST Thursday as the surf will not subside until Thursday evening.

NWS advises swimmers to take the following precautions:

  • Swim in a direction following the shoreline.
  • Swim near a lifeguard as high surf and rip currents will make swimming dangerous.
  • If getting caught in a rip current, swimmer should remain calm and not fight the current.
  • When being out of the current, swimmer should swim back to shore.
  • If tired, floating or tread water until out of the rip current.
  • Face the shore and call or wave for help if unable to escape.
