SANTA MONICA—Tesla recently filed a preliminary development application with the city of Santa Monica, referencing a “Tesla restaurant and supercharger station.” The address cited in the proposal is 1401 Santa Monica Boulevard, which is currently a Volvo dealership.
While the company has not formally confirmed the project, a tweet from CEO Elon Musk hints at the basic idea.
“Gonna put an old school drive-in, roller skates & rock restaurant at one of the new Tesla Supercharger locations in LA,” Musk tweeted on January 6. Musk is looking to build a 1950s style establishment in the region.
According to the Tesla website, Superchargers located in urban areas have a new post design that occupies less space and are easier to install, making them ideal for dense, highly populated areas. To increase efficiency and support a high volume of cars, these Superchargers have a new architecture that delivers a rapid 72 kilowatts of dedicated power to each car.
There are currently four Tesla Supercharging stations in Los Angeles County. Accoridng to the Tesla website, Supercharge stations are expected in the cities of Beverly Hills, Calabasas, Hollywood, Long Beach, Sherman Oaks, San Francisco and Studio City in the near future.
